Who Is This Jesus?

John 13:1-5

1 Now before the feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that His hour had come that He should depart from this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.

2 And supper being ended, the devil having already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray Him,

3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come from God and was going to God,

4 rose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded Himself.

5 After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded. (NKJ)

  1. He was one who knew who He was.
    1. He knew He was the Son of God.
      1. Matt 26:63-64 63 But Jesus kept silent. And the high priest answered and said to Him, "I put You under oath by the living God: Tell us if You are the Christ, the Son of God!" 64 Jesus said to him, "It is as you said. (NKJ)
      2. This is what makes the events of supper so grand.
      3. Jesus knew that He was God but He humbled himself.
      4. Phil 2:5-11 5 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, 7 but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. 9 Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, 10that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (NKJ)
    2. He knew that He was God in flesh.
      1. Col 1:15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. (NKJ)
      2. 1 Tim 3:16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifested in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen by angels, preached among the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up in glory. (NKJ)
      3. Heb 1:3 who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, (NKJ)
    3. He knew that He was Lord over all.
      1. John 13:13 "You call me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am. (NKJ)
      2. Matt 7:21 "Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. (NKJ)
      3. Matt 26:63-64 But Jesus kept silent. And the high priest answered and said to Him, "I put You under oath by the living God: Tell us if You are the Christ, the Son of God!" Jesus said to him, "It is as you said. Nevertheless, I say to you, hereafter you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven." (NKJ)
  2. He was one who knew what He was doing.
    1. He understood the plan of our redemption.
      1. John 3:16
      2. He was under no false illusion that He was to escape the cross.
    2. He understood the sacrifice He was about to make.
      1. He gave them the bread and the cup
      2. He knew that He must ransom His people from their sins.
    3. He understood that this was the Father's will.
      1. He does not try to escape.
      2. All he needed to do was not go to Jerusalem.
      3. He could have called 12 legion of angels.
    4. He was continuing the plan of emptying His deity, His rightful place as Divine, to die for us.
      1. Phil 2:7 7 but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, {and} being made in the likeness of men.(NAS)
      2. Phil 2:8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. (NAS)
  3. He was one who knew His destiny.
    1. He knew that He would soon return to the Father.
    2. He knew He was not of the world.
    3. He knew that the world would never look to Him for who He was.
    4. He knew that heaven was His eternal dwelling place.
  4. Now what about us.
    1. Do we consider who we are?
    2. Do we know what we are to be doing in this life?
    3. Do we really know our destiny is heaven and only that is eternal.
    4. Listen to the words from farther down in the passage-
      1. John 13:15-1715 "For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. 16 "Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. 17 "If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them. (NKJ)
      2. Notice that the blessedness is not in knowing but in doing.
      3. We need to not simply proclaim the love of Jesus but live it.
      4. We need to do more than simply proclaim the humility of Jesus, we need to live it.
      5. We need to not simply proclaim the power of His resurrection but we need to live it.
    5. Let us not only know, but do.
