Wisdom: A Father’s Best Friend

Titus 2:6-8

6 In the same way, encourage the young men to live wisely in all they do. 7 And you yourself must be an example to them by doing good deeds of every kind. Let everything you do reflect the integrity and seriousness of your teaching. 8 Let your teaching be so correct that it can't be criticized. Then those who want to argue will be ashamed because they won't have anything bad to say about us. NLT

Parents have one of the most difficult jobs in the world. It is so difficult that many make a conscious decision to never embark on it. It is difficult not so much for the hard labor and the late night that you will keep. It is not for the tons of clothes you will wash or the seeming endless hours that you will put in at work to provide for their needs and wants.

The most difficult part is the decisions. How do I answer that question or how do I get them to try harder at school? Should I let them to do that or go there? How do I fashion their life to make them a more responsible adult? It could be as simple though as how do I get them to eat their vegetables?

But where does one go for answers to these questions. You could watch the Dr Phil show and hope that they would eventually get around to the subject you are interested in. Or you could go to the bookstore. There are literally thousands of books on parenting or how to be a proper father. Books from Dobson to Dr. Laura fill the shelves.

But yet with all this advice, it doesn’t always agree. Some times one person says one thing and someone else says another. How do we know which one is right? You see most of the time we only get one chance to be wrong.

I think Paul has the answer here. “Teach the young men to live wisely.”

Wisdom is our answer. Wisdom is the ability to take all the information at hand and come up with a brilliant solution. Usually we think of wisdom coming with age, although the younger people often doubt it. But much of our wisdom come from experience. We do it wrong or see it done wrong and we get a little wiser. Although some people do it wrong again and again and never seem the wiser.

But isn’t there somewhere, somehow we can get wisdom without making the mistakes ourselves?

I.         There is a book of eternal wisdom.

            A.        Beside the book of Proverbs which, is a book of wisdom, there is wisdom to be found in every page of this book.

            B.        You can not only read the wisdom of Solomon but of David, Abraham, Joseph, all the prophets and especially of Jesus and His apostles.

            C.        Ps 1:1-3 Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful; 2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night. 3 He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper. NKJV

            D.        Ps 119:99-100 99 I have more understanding than all my teachers, For Your testimonies are my meditation. 100 I understand more than the ancients, Because I keep Your precepts. NKJV

            E.        Ps 94:12 Blessed is the man whom You instruct, O LORD, And teach out of Your law, NKJV

            F.        Ps 119:130 The entrance of Your words gives light; It gives understanding to the simple. NKJV

            G.        Ps 19:7 The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul; The testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple; NKJV

II.        There is a source of wisdom.

            A.        Prov 3:5-6 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; 6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths. NKJV

            B.        Ezra 7:25 And you, Ezra, according to your God-given wisdom, set magistrates and judges who may judge all the people NKJV

            C.        Dan 2:20 Daniel answered and said: "Blessed be the name of God forever and ever, For wisdom and might are His. NKJV

            D.        Notice how God tells Solomon of the wisdom God gave him. 1 Kings 3:12 behold, I have done according to your words; see, I have given you a wise and understanding heart, so that there has not been anyone like you before you, nor shall any like you arise after you. NKJV

            E.        Look at what God said to Moses, Ex 4:11-12 11 So the LORD said to him,"Who has made man's mouth? Or who makes the mute, the deaf, the seeing, or the blind? Have not I, the LORD? 12 Now therefore, go, and I will be with your mouth and teach you what you shall say." NKJV

            F.        Ps 25:12 Who is the man that fears the LORD? Him shall He teach in the way He chooses. NKJV

            G.        Ps 71:17 O God, You have taught me from my youth; And to this day I declare Your wondrous works. NKJV

III.       There is a guide for wisdom.

            A.        John 16:13-15 13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. 14 He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. 15 All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and declare it to you. NKJV

IV.      There is a fellowship of wisdom.

            A.        I had rather listen to a good Christian teach on raising children that all the secular teachers put together.

                        1.         You see I know where the one got his information but the other is quite dubious.

            B.        1 Cor 1:30 But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God — and righteousness and sanctification and redemption NKJV

            C.        2 Cor 4:6 For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. NKJV

            D.        2 Tim 1:7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. NKJV same word as in text

            E.        1 John 2:20-21; 20 But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you know all things. 21 I have not written to you because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and that no lie is of the truth. NKJV

            F.        1 John 5:20 And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us an understanding, that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life. NKJV

If you will seek God and spend time in His Word and give yourself to the leading of the Holy Spirit you will be wise beyond all belief. Being a father is never easy, but having the wisdom that God gives will make your job so much easier. If you need more wisdom, ask God, seek God, pray and you will have it. For God loves to give good gifts to His children.
