Glory to God

Luke 2:14

“Glory to God in the highest” NKJV

In the passage today the angels have come down to announce the birth of the Savior of the world. And the result of that is that they give glory to God. Glory is a form of worship reserved only for God.

We often praise people because of what we have done, usually for us. Our common thank you is of that sort. But God is to be worshiped not only because of what He has don but because of who he is. He is God and there is none beside Him. Think of those angels that night giving glory to God. Yet they had always done that and continue to glorify God day and night around the throne of God.

Every vision of God revealed in the Bible is one of worship and praise. Listen to John in the book of Revelation chapter 4: Rev 4:2-11

2 Immediately I was in the Spirit; and behold, a throne set in heaven, and One sat on the throne. 3 And He who sat there was like a jasper and a sardius stone in appearance; and there was a rainbow around the throne, in appearance like an emerald. 4 Around the throne were twenty-four thrones, and on the thrones I saw twenty-four elders sitting, clothed in white robes; and they had crowns of gold on their heads. 5 And from the throne proceeded lightnings, thunderings, and voices. Seven lamps of fire were burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God.

6 Before the throne there was a sea of glass, like crystal. And in the midst of the throne, and around the throne, were four living creatures full of eyes in front and in back. 7 The first living creature was like a lion, the second living creature like a calf, the third living creature had a face like a man, and the fourth living creature was like a flying eagle. 8 The four living creatures, each having six wings, were full of eyes around and within. And they do not rest day or night, saying:

"Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, Who was and is and is to come!"

9 Whenever the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to Him who sits on the throne, who lives forever and ever, 10 the twenty-four elders fall down before Him who sits on the throne and worship Him who lives forever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying:

11 "You are worthy, O Lord, To receive glory and honor and power; For You created all things, And by Your will they exist and were created." NKJV

I.         We are commanded to give glory to God.

            A.        1 Chron 16:28-29 28 Give to the LORD, O families of the peoples, Give to the LORD glory and strength. 29 Give to the LORD the glory due His name; NKJV

II.        Why should we give Him glory

            A.        Ps 115:1 Not unto us, O LORD, not unto us, But to Your name give glory, Because of Your mercy, Because of Your truth. NKJV

                        1.         God is merciful to us.

                        2.         That is the Christmas story.

                        3.         Jesus came to earth on a mission of mercy to reach fallen rebellious men and women who refused to give God the glory due His Name.

                        4.         Even for us Gentiles.

                                    a.         We are not a part of the covenant with Abraham.

                                    b.         But God wished that even the gentiles would glorify Him.

                                    c.         Notice the passages that Paul quotes.

                                    d.         Rom 15:8-12 9 and that the Gentiles might glorify God for His mercy, as it is written: " For this reason I will confess to You among the Gentiles, And sing to Your name."

                                    e.         10 And again he says: "Rejoice, O Gentiles, with His people!"

                                    f.         11 And again: "Praise the LORD, all you Gentiles! Laud Him, all you peoples!"

                                    g.         12 And again, Isaiah says: "There shall be a root of Jesse; And He who shall rise to reign over the Gentiles, In Him the Gentiles shall hope." NKJV

                        5.         Then God merciful to us Gentiles.

                        6.         And that cause the Jews to glorify God.

                        7.         When Peter is explaining in Acts chapter 11 of how the Gentiles had believed the glorified God because He had also given repentance to the Gentiles.

                        8.         Acts 11:18 When they heard these things they became silent; and they glorified God, saying,"Then God has also granted to the Gentiles repentance to life." NKJV

            B.        Thus the angels proclaimed that the birth of the Savior was not just for the people of Bethlehem or of Israel, but they said. “I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people.” Luke 2:10 NKJV

                        1.         That’s me and you.

                        2.         Can we give God glory that Jesus came to this world for us and not just for the Jews.

III.       Notice also that we glorify God for His truth.

            A.        Ps 115:1 Not unto us, O LORD, not unto us, But to Your name give glory, Because of Your mercy, Because of Your truth. NKJV

            B.        A certain news person had a recent special on heaven.

                        1.         But the whole idea of her show was to demonstrate that any way will get you to heaven.

                        2.         If that is the case, then Jesus birth was unneeded.

                        3.         If would not have been good news of great joy if just any old faith was good enough to get us to heaven.

            C.        Jesus said He was the way the truth and the life, and that there was no other way to get to heaven beside him.

What a blessed day to gather together to worship. To give glory to God the the unspeakable gift of His Son. 2 Cor 9:15 Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift KJV
